Who We Are ---
We
are Manhattan Project Heritage Enthusiasts!
We are four Oak Ridge residents who love our beautiful city
and its very special Tennessee heritage. We are all driven by a desire to see
the amazing Oak Ridge story---and the larger story all the sites of
the Manhattan Project---be told and remembered. The Manhattan Project was America’s massive (and super-secret) effort to build the world’s
first atomic bomb during World War II.
The modern predecessor to the City of Oak Ridge
was built in 1943 in order to house tens of thousands of
“temporary” workers who flooded into the area to work on three
new Manhattan Project plants. These individuals left their homes and friends
to come to a dusty, bug-infested Tennessee
work camp (known as the Secret City) to do their part in the country’s war effort. Beyond
the workers, the Secret City also impacted several thousand local area
residents who were pushed out of their family homes and off their land---on
very short notice---in order to make room for the enormous project. The great
sacrifice of all these folks, as well as their ingenuity and resolve, make a
truly inspiring tale.
We are very pleased to offer high-quality items to
commemorate these people as well as those who lived and worked at other
Manhattan Project sites. Please check out our supply of collectibles, mugs,
and DVDs. We are constantly searching for new and interesting products, so
plan now to come back and look at what’s new!
We believe that businesses should contribute to the
development of their local communities. In order to better promote Oak Ridge,
we try to keep the prices on our items as low as possible. Also, portions of the The Secret City
Store’s income are donated each year to activities which promote interest
in and preservation of our city’s great heritage.
